Juneau City and Borough Overview
Juneau Police Department Records Request
The Juneau Police Department handles records requests through an online form at juneau.org/police/records-request. Requests can also be submitted in person or by mail. The form accepts PDF file attachments up to 50MB. You must describe the documents you are requesting with specifics. Vague requests will slow processing. The Records Unit provides a status update within 5 business days of receiving your request.
When filling out the form, you need to include your name, address, phone number, and email. You must also state your involvement in the incident. If you are not a party to the case or an attorney of record, you can select "Other Party of Interest." JPD requires the description to identify specific documents rather than asking staff to search files on your behalf. Include the case number, date of incident, and location if you have them. The more detail you provide, the faster the request moves.

Note: Reports for open or active investigations are not subject to public disclosure. Reports with pending charges or an identified but unadjudicated suspect are also withheld until the case closes.
JPD Records Disclosure Policy
JPD follows a defined policy for what it can and cannot release. Police reports for open or active investigations are not disclosed to the public. Reports where charges are pending or a suspect has been identified but not yet adjudicated are also held back. Third-party records from other agencies, hospitals, or fire departments are not released by JPD even if they are attached to a case file.
Confidential information is redacted from any reports that are released. This includes informant names, home addresses of private parties, and information protected by law. Fees are assessed according to state and city fee schedules. Media members have the same access rights as any member of the public. If one media outlet is given access to a record, all others have equal access to the same material.
Sealed or expunged records are handled with strict rules. When you request a sealed or expunged record, JPD must respond "No records exist with respect to such person." They cannot confirm or deny what is sealed. The only way to access sealed or expunged records is through a specific court order directing the department to release them. Under AS 12.62.160, these protections are written into state law and apply to all Alaska law enforcement agencies.
Filing a Police Report in Juneau
Juneau Police offer online non-emergency report filing at juneau.org/police/file-a-report. This tool is for non-emergency incidents only. Do not use it for crimes in progress, emergencies, or situations where someone is in danger. Those always require a 911 call. The online form is for minor incidents that do not need an immediate officer response.
Once you submit an online report, you can print a copy for your records at no charge. The report enters the JPD system and may be followed up on by officers if additional information is needed. Online reporting is a convenient option for things like minor thefts, vandalism, and lost property when the incident is over and no suspect is present. Domestic violence incidents do not qualify for online reporting. An officer must respond in person to those calls.

JPD posts daily bulletins and press releases online, which are good sources for recent criminal activity in Juneau.
